Molecular hydrogen (H2) or diatomic hydrogen is a tasteless, odorless, flammable gas.
H2 reduces oxidative stress and improves redox homeostasis partly mediated via the Nrf2 pathway, which regulates levels of glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, etc.
H2, like other gaseous-signaling molecules (e.g. NO*, CO, H2S), modulates signal transduction, protein phosphorylation, and gene expression, which provides its anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy, and anti-apoptotic protective effects.

Hydrogen: An Emerging Medical Gas

Molecular hydrogen (i.e. H2 gas) is gaining significant attention from academic researchers, medical doctors, and physicians around the world for its recently reported therapeutic potential. One of the earliest publications on hydrogen as a medical gas was in 1975, by Dole and colleagues from Baylor University and Texas A&M. They reported in the journal Science that hyperbaric (8 atm) hydrogen therapy was effective at reducing melanoma tumors in mice. However, the interest in hydrogen therapy only recently began after 2007, when it was demonstrated that administration of hydrogen gas via inhalation (at levels below the flammability limit of 4.6%) or ingestion of an aqueous-solution containing dissolved hydrogen, could also exert therapeutic biological effects. These findings suggest hydrogen has immediate medical and clinical applications.
What is the first thing the fire department does when its trucks arrive at a fire? They pull out the hoses, connect to the hydrants, and pour tons of water onto the nastiest fires. In the medicalworld, the equivalent is hydrogen, which too can be flooded into a dying body to put out the flames of inflammation and oxidative stress. In the future, hydrogen will become as important in hospitals as oxygen.
Molecular hydrogen (H2) functions as an extensive protector against oxidative stress, inflammation and allergic reactions. Molecular hydrogen is a medical gas that can be dissolved in water and administered through drinking, inhalation, transdermally, used in baths, and by intravenous drip (IV). Molecular hydrogen has proven useful and convenient as a novel antioxidant and modifier of gene expression where oxidative stress results in cellular damage. Many studies have confirmed that consumption of hydrogen gas and water helps patients with a diverse range of disorders including the digestive, cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Drinking Dissolved Hydrogen

Understand that without water there is no life. Without sufficient hydration, all other medical treatments are doomed to fail. There is no substitute for good water and no getting around the realities of dehydration. All functions within the body require the presence of water. A well-hydrated body enables biological functions to occur quickly and efficiently. One of the secrets to health and recovery from chronic disease is drinking a lot of healthy water loaded with strong healing agents.

Science and Medicine have been studying miracle-healing waters found in nature for a long time. Most healing spring waters turns out to be high in hydrogen i.e. Nordenau in Germany, Lourdes in France, Tlacote in Mexxico and Nadana in India.

Hydrogen rich water is practical for individual hydration. It elevates oral medicine to the level of intravenous medicine because of the ultra-quick absorption and dispersion deep into the cells. However, the concentration of hydrogen in normal drinking water at standard ambient temperature is 0.8 mM or 1.6 ppm (1.6mg/L). For reference, conventional water (e.g. tap, filtered, bottled, etc.) contains less than 0.0000002ppm of H2, which is well below the therapeutic level. 

NASA is researching hydrogen water to protect their astronauts from radiation during space travel. Perfect for the anti-aging crowd soon we will find hydrogen used widely in ICU, emergency departments and even in ambulances. Deep sea divers know all about this. The deeper divers go the more stress/pressure they are under. The deeper they go the more hydrogen needs to be in their tanks and interesting enough the less oxygen.

What is hydrogen water?

Hydrogen water or hydrogen-rich water (also called hydrogen-enriched water) simply means normal water (H2O) that contains dissolved hydrogen gas (H2). For example, there are carbonated waters or beverages (soda pop), which contain dissolved carbon dioxide gas (CO2), or oxygen water, which contains dissolved oxygen gas (O2). Similarly, you can have water that contains dissolved hydrogen gas.

Doesn’t water already have hydrogen in it because water is H2O?

The water molecule has two hydrogen atoms, chemically bound to the oxygen atom. This is different from the hydrogen gas molecule (H2), which is just two hydrogen atoms bound only to each other.

Here’s an example: we need oxygen (O2) to live, so why can’t we just get our oxygen from drinking water, H2O? It’s because the oxygen is chemically tied up in the water molecule. We need available oxygen gas, (O2) that is not bound to other atoms or molecules. In the same way, for the dissolved hydrogen gas (H2) to benefit us, it must be in an unbound form, and therefore available for therapeutic benefit.

In hydrogen water, the hydrogen that is shown to be therapeutic is the available dissolved hydrogen in its diatomic form, called molecular hydrogen.

I thought that if water is “hydrogen rich”, then it must be acidic?

Great question! If the water is rich in positive hydrogen ions (H+). then yes, it is acidic. But in this case, we’re talking about neutral hydrogen gas (H2), which is two hydrogen atoms tied together.

It can be confusing to hear “hydrogen water” because we usually think of hydrogen (meaning the hydrogen ion, H+) as acidic, and that is basically the definition of pH. The p stands for potential or power, meaning a mathematical exponent (in this case a logarithmic function), and the H stands for the hydrogen ion, which is just a proton and no electron. So pH literally means the logarithmic concentration of the hydrogen ion.

But when we say “hydrogen water” we are referring to dihydrogen or molecular hydrogen, which is a neutral gas that is dissolved in the water.

Is hydrogen safe?

Yes. Hydrogen gas has been shown to be very safe at concentrations hundreds of times higher than what is being used for therapy. Examples: In the late 1800s, hydrogen was used to locate gunshot wounds in the intestines; and hydrogen gas has been used in deep sea diving since 1943 (at very high concentrations) to prevent decompression sickness. Furthermore, hydrogen gas is natural to the body because after a fiber-rich meal, our gut bacteria can produce liters of hydrogen on a daily basis (which is yet another benefit from eating fruits and vegetables).

I heard that drinking alkaline water can neutralize excess acid.

Alkaline water is not a buffer and low alkalinity. As such, it cannot neutralize very much acid. Just a small amount of soda can easily lower the pH of a gallon of alkaline water. To put this into perspective, consider that 1 tsp of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) can neutralize the same amount of acid as 10,000 liters of alkaline water at a pH of 10. This is the primary reason why medical professionals have been sceptical about “alkaline ionized water”. It simply wasn’t known that the benefit of this water is attributed to the dissolved hydrogen gas until around 2007.

What are the benefits of hydrogen?

Hydrogen is the ideal antioxidant. Being the smallest (& lightest) element in the universe, our body can easily absorb hydrogen. It can even penetrate our minute brain cells which many antioxidants are unable to. Because of this, it is particularly good for brain diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer and Dementia.

For example, if the molecular weight of Hydrogen is 2, well-known antioxidants such as Vitamin C is 176, Vitamin E is 431 and Coenzyme Q10 (COQ10) is 863 respectively.

The wonder of hydrogen water is that it can selectively neutralize not just any Reactive Oxygen Species in our body, but only the toxic ROS (hydroxyl radical, ● OH) which are notorious for destroying normal cells of distorting DNAs, and turn it into harmless water (H20).

Toxic ROS damages our body cells and cell damage is the root cause of aging and disease. Why drink hydrogen water?

Hydrogen water is the healthiest of beverages. It is the most convenient and is calorie-free. Hydrogen neutralizes the toxic free radicals and turns it into water, leaving no by-products.
